Bring your inspiration — including the maybes
Save gowns you love to your phone: Instagram, Pinterest, photos of weddings you attended. Ten images tell us more than an hour of description. Include images you're unsure about too — the pattern in what almost works is often where your gown is hiding.
Know your two essentials
Wedding date and venue type. The date sets the timeline (see how far in advance to order), and the venue shapes the gown — cathedral train and beach sand are enemies
Wear the right underlayer
Nude, seamless underwear and any shapewear you plan to wear on the day. Bring heels of roughly your wedding-shoe height. Skip heavy makeup if you'll be trying gowns on — for your own sake and the ivory silk's.
Choose your entourage carefully
Bring one to three people whose taste you trust and who want you to be happy. Eight opinions in a fitting room produce a compromise, not a wedding dress. The people who must approve the gown should be there; everyone else can see photos.
