Almost every bride is surprised — and many are briefly upset — the first time they see the number on a wedding gown label. A woman who wears a size 10 in everyday clothes may find herself in a bridal size 14 or even 16. Nothing about her body changed. So what happened?
Bridal sizing is an older standard
Wedding gown sizing still follows measurement charts from decades ago, while everyday fashion has drifted through years of "vanity sizing" — brands labelling clothes with smaller numbers to flatter shoppers. Bridal never followed. The result: the same body, two very different numbers.
The tag number is not a judgement. It is simply a different ruler.
What actually matters: your measurements
A gown that fits beautifully has nothing to do with the number sewn inside it and everything to do with three core measurements — bust, waist, and hips — plus height, torso length, and the shape of your shoulders and back. Because most women don't fall neatly into one column of any chart, ready-made gowns are usually cut to the largest of your three measurements and altered down.

Three practical tips
- Never buy or reserve by tag size. Always be measured first.
- Don't order a smaller size as motivation. Taking a gown in is straightforward; letting one out is often impossible because of the beadwork and seam allowances.
- Wear the underwear and shoes you plan to wear on the day to every measurement session and fitting — they change everything.
